Dandelion Wine
Because we try to keep our lawn natural (no harsh chemicals, pesticides, etc,) we have a lot of dandelions. We joked about making dandelion wine last summer, but little did I know, my wife wasn’t joking. So a week ago a wine making kit arrived at the house, and we spent an while collecting dandelions from our front yard.
The first step was washing all the heads (you don’t use the stems or greens at all for wine).
Next we started pulling the petals off of the heads. Ideally you want as little green as possible and only the petals. After about 10 minutes we decided having no green at all was nearly impossible and we didn’t have the patience for it, so we decided to just use kitchen sheers and cut the petals and white of of the heads until we had a nice bowl full of petals.
After that we boiled the petals in large pot and let it sit for 24 hours to create our must.
After 24 hours bring the must back to a boil, add a bunch of sugar, some lemon+orange zest, a bunch of raisins, and of course, your yeast. All that gets put into jars where it will now sit fermenting for several months.
I have no idea how it will turn out, or if we will actually like it at all, but I’m sure curious to see in a few months!
